About High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

HIFU stands for "High Intensity Focused Ultrasound". It is also known as MRgFUS (MRI-guided focused ultrasound) and FUS (focused ultrasound). HIFU is a non-invasive treatment technique that uses non-ionizing ultrasound to heat or ablate tissue and is indicated for patients who are not candidates for surgery or have contraindications to surgery.

HIFU can be used to increase the flow of blood or lymph, or to destroy tissue through thermal and mechanical mechanisms. Given the popularity and relatively low cost of ultrasound, HIFU has been subject to a lot of research and development. HIFU is traditionally combined with other imaging techniques such as medical ultrasound or MRI to enable guidance for treatment and monitoring.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

High-intensity focused ultrasound currently plays an important clinical role in many fields and has substantial evidence of safety and efficacy. Therapeutic applications of the HIFU modality, which can be used to treat many diseases by utilizing thermal energy to induce protein denaturation or non-thermal energy to destroy tissue, are a rapidly emerging field.

Ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) plays an important role in the treatment of primary tumors and metastases. It has applications in the nervous system, genitourinary system, hepatopancreatobiliary system, musculoskeletal system, and oncology. As technology has advanced, the recognition and utility of HIFU has grown significantly in many areas of the body, such as the brain, thyroid, liver, kidney, pancreas, breast, uterus, prostate, and bones.

Emerging HIFU technology has multiple benefits: non-invasive non-surgical treatment, reduced risk of treatment, no ionizing radiation, faster recovery time, precision. This novel, minimally invasive, and innovative treatment is expected to be an alternative or supplement to current standard treatments.
